17th April 2007: Training for Audiovisual Preservation in Europe: Amsterdam, 17th-24th April 2007
This 5 day workshop provided a first rate introduction to audiovisual preservation. The course mixed practical measures that can be undertaken on a limited budget with more in depth technical information.
The correct handling and storage methods for all carriers were outlined along with small-scale and low cost approaches to audiovisual preservation.
The properties, recording methods and life expectancy of different types of audiovisual carriers were compared. This led onto presentations on data reduction, signal extraction and digital mass storage systems.
IASA TC-03 The Safeguarding of the Audio Heritage: Ethics, Principles and Preservation Strategy was also discussed (see: http://www.iasa-web.org/IASA_TC03/TC03_English.pdf)
An introductory guide to identifying film properties, cataloguing and setting up a preservation plan supplemented the more technical aspects of the course. The lectures were also reinforced by visits to Haghe Films, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and the Filmmuseum to see preservation in practice.
After the workshop Sarah Jones gave a preservation entitled 'Practical Steps Towards Audiovisual Preservation' which can be downloaded here.
