Historical GIS
A Geographical Information System (GIS) is effectively a form of database in which every item of data in a GIS is linked to a representation of where the data refer to. This is usually in the form of a point, line, polygon (representing an area or zone) or a pixel. Historical GIS is the use of GIS to study the past. Further information on historical GIS can be found via the Historical GIS Research Network website. This website includes a bibliography, resources and potential training courses.
Text Mining for Historians
An increasing number of historical texts are becoming available in electronic format. Text mining techniques provide a number of different approaches and tools for analysing and processing these texts with automatic systems that either significant patterns in the language and content of the texts or which help to make connections between previously unrelated 'facts' in the text to make new facts or generate new hypotheses. Further information on text mining can be found on the National Centre for Text Mining website.
