History is one of the subject areas where the AHRC and ESRC share responsibility for the support of research as outlined in the Joint AHRC/ESRC Statement on Subject Coverage. AHDS History's collection is therefore catalogued in both the Arts and Humanities Data Service's Cross Search Catalogue and the UK Data Archive's Data Catalogue. The AHDS Cross Search Catalogue enables historians to search concurrently the collections of all five AHDS centres (History, Language, Literature and Linguistics, Archaeology, Performing Arts and Visual Arts). The UKDA's Data Catalogue allows economic and social historians to concurrently search the collections of AHDS History and the rest of the UK Data Archive.

Finding Data

There are several ways to locate detailed information about AHDS History's collection.

Most of the collection is available to higher and further education users free of charge for teaching, learning and research purposes. If data is required for commercial uses then AHDS History's policy on the use of data for commercial purposes applies. Data can be accessed either via the Arts and Humanities Data Service or the UK Data Archive.

AHDS Cross Search Catalogue - allows users to download resources from all AHDS subject areas. Some of AHDS History's studies require you to register with the AHDS via a simple online form and this does not require an Athens ID. Currently not all AHDS History studies are available via the AHDS Cross Search Catalogue, however in these instances each catalogue record provides a link to the relevant catalogue record in the UKDA Data Catalogue.

UKDA Data Catalogue - all our studies can be ordered online via the UKDA's online ordering system. You will have to be registered with the UK Data Archive to place an order with this system. Registration is a two-stage process. First, you will need to obtain an Athens ID which staff and students of UK Higher and Further Education institutions should be able to obtain from their instititution. For users outside the UK Higher and Further Education community the UK Data Archive can issue special Athens IDs. Second, using your Athens ID you will need to register with the UK Data Archive.

Once registered, you may then order via your new account by clicking on the 'Download/Order' link on any catalogue record. Non-commercial users can download the data for free or choose to pay for the data to be delivered on CD.
