AHDS History policy on the use of data for commercial purposes

Users requiring data for commercial purposes need to contact AHDS History outlining how they intend to use the data. When data are required for commercial purposes there is a per study number administration fee of £500. If a study already obtained is required for a new usage, the per study number fee of £500 is re-applied.

In most cases AHDS History has to request permission from the data owner before supplying data for commercial purposes. The data owner has the right to request royalty payments. These royalty payments are fixed at the discretion of the data owner and are generally applied for each usage of the data collection.

 

Definitions

‘educational and research purposes’ - use of the data for education, private study or research provided that such use does not generate a profit through dealings in, or other exploitation of, the data collection.

‘commercial purposes’ – use of the data for any reason, direct or indirect, which generates a profit.

 

VAT (Value Added Tax)

VAT (currently 17.5%) is charged according to HM Customs and Excise guidelines. The following users and/or uses are currently exempt or zero rated:
• all students, in any country, using data for their education;
• users, in any country, using the data for academic teaching purposes;
• users from European Union (EU) countries who provide a VAT number;
• users from outside the EU;
• users from the University of Essex using the data for departmental purposes.

 

Payment methods

Where payment is required pro forma invoices will be sent in the post.
