Evaluation of a Digital Transcription of English Parochial Registers, 1538-1851: A Pilot Study

The recent explosion of interest in genealogical research has led to a vast quantity of digital resource material being made available to Higher Education. The Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) has offered to AHDS History an exceptional resource comprising a database of virtually all baptismal and marriage registers for England between 1538 and the mid-nineteenth centuries. The information within these parochial registers form the bedrock of historical demographic research.

This project aims to assess the accuracy and the reliability of the transcription of these parochial registers for one county in England (Bedfordshire), and prepare versions for dissemination to the HE/FE community for research and teaching purposes. The project also aims to create a workflow methodology for the preparation of dissemination and preservation versions of the complete datasets which will be made available by the GSU to AHDS History.

This one year pilot project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
