Reformatting the Parish Register Aggregate Analyses, 1662-1811; 404 Data

This project was funded by the ESRC to make the original data which informed the Population History of England and Wales, 1538-1838 available in a format which was more analytically friendly by reformatting and aggregating the whole of the 404 Parish Register Dataset into a national integrated version of the parish event totals.

The 'original' study was completed in the late 1970s. In the early 1990s, under the auspices of Local Population Studies, it was re-packaged as a series of spreadsheets. Each parish being represented by 10 spreadsheets, which between them recorded:

  • original monthly and annual totals of births, deaths and marriages;
  • a 'corrected' version of this data;
  • monthly seasonality indexex by half-century;
  • 'crisis' information concerning periods of epidemic mortality crisis in each parish, and severity of the epidemic.

During re-aggregation the 5,252 worksheets that made up the 404 data were transformed into four flat-file tables. In addition each parish was given an identification number, allowing its integration with Kain and Oliver's Historic Parishes of England and Wales: an Electronic Map of Boundaries before 1850 with a Gazetteer and Metadata.
