ICT Guides - Inspiration and information for researchers

ICT Guides is a service offered by the Arts and Humanities Data Service

This service aims to promote ICTs in research and learning through cataloging digital arts and humanities projects.

ICT Guides is unique in listing the tools, methods, and standards that are commonly used in arts and humanities digital projects. It's hoped that those undertaking new digitisation projects can learn from the methods and tools employed by others. There are already a number of projects listed on ICT Guides within the diverse fields that make up the digital arts and humanities.

Methods

What ICT-based methods do researchers use? The ICT Guides contain listings of the ICT-based methods that arts and humanities researchers have used to capture, structure and enhance, analyse and present digital research outputs.

There are over 150 ICT-based research methods currently listed - grouped into seven major categories, such as: data capture which includes, for example, methods relating to manual transcription of text and scanning of two-dimensional objects and data structuring and enhancement which includes methods like designing a database and digitally enhancing images.

Examples of best practice projects

The growing ICT Guides catalogue now includes information on many of the UK's most important digital research projects.

There are links between the projects and the methods they used. Finding a project that is within a similar subject area, or which produces similar content to your research, will help identify methods that other researchers have found useful.

Hopefully these examples of best practice will both inform and inspire those researchers who wish to engage with the potential of ICT in the arts and humanities.
