The AHDS has won the tender for two six month JISC Archiving Studies, beginning in July and September of 2005. These studies form part of the JISC feasibility study programme and will help scope future JISC activity in these areas.

Digital Images Archiving Study

This study will investigate the way that digital image files are being preserved as well as determining archiving methodologies and future research possibilities (looking at both 'born digital' and digitised images).

The Digital Images Archiving Study is under direction of Sheila Anderson, Director of AHDS, Mike Pringle, (AHDS Visual Arts), and Julian Richards (AHDS Archaeology) with Emma Beer as Project Manager.

Moving Pictures and Sound Archiving Study

This study will also investigate the way that digital sound and moving pictures files are being preserved, as well as determining archiving methodologies and future research possibilities. This study includes both "born digital" and digitised material.

The Moving Pictures and Archiving Study is under the direction Sheila Anderson, Director of the AHDS and Andrew Wilson, Preservation Manager of the AHDS, with Emma Beer as Project Manager, and Richard Wright (BBC Archives) and Simon Tanner (King's Digital Consultancy Services) providing vital input as consultants for the study.

Both studies will investigate:

  • Current practice and views with regard to the long-term retention of sound and moving pictures files/digital images, including an audit of JISC-funded moving pictures and sound materials/digital images
  • Identifying gaps in current research
  • Possible models for preservation techniques
  • Establishing a clear methodology for long-term preservation
  • Developing an optimum metadata schema for the material in question (based on an examination of exiting metadata schemas)
