ESRC-Economic and Social Research Council
Historical Geographical Information Systems Research Network

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of its Research Seminars Competition has funded a seminar program to develop understanding of how Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can be used to understand the geographies of the past.

Aims
  1. To provide a focus for historical GIS research in Europe,
  2. To advance understanding of historical GIS at the technical, methodological and applied levels,
  3. To encourage the adoption of GIS amongst a broad audience with an interest in the past,
  4. To investigate the setting up of an international association to act as a focus for historical GIS research.
Events

During 2006-2008 the network will hold four main events.

1. An expert seminar

2. An outreach seminar took place on the 28th of February 2007 at the University of York

3. An outreach seminar took place on the 24 October 2007 at King's College London

4. A two day conference at the University of Essex - 21-22 August 2008

The Association for History and Computing UK (AHC-UK) is offering free membership for the AHC-UK to all PhD students who attend these seminars. They will also be offering a £25 bursary towards travelling costs for one PhD student at each outreach seminar. Every PhD student who is offered a place at a seminar will automatically be considered for the bursary.
