AHDS History enriches and enhances selected data collections by developing thematic special collections where there is a critical mass of related data collections. Value is added to these data collections by synthesising, harmonising, and restructuring them and creating additional documentation. AHDS History also develops thematic special collections by occasionally commissioning the creation of additional material and by participating in data creation projects in an advisory role.

The following thematic special collections are currently being developed:

• census enumerators' books
• British and Irish nineteenth and twentieth century statistics
• poll books
• wage and price time series
• local history
• prosopography
