Description

The objective of the SHERPA (Securing a Hybrid Environment for Research Preservation and Access) project is to advance development and research of scholarly communication and publishing. The project, led by the University of Nottingham and composed of seven development partners (Nottingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford, White Rose, British Library & AHDS) and six associate partners (Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Durham, Newcastle & London LEAP), aims:

  • To set up thirteen institutional open access e-print repositories which comply with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI PMH) using eprints.org software;
  • To investigate key issues in the creation, population and maintenance of e-print collections.
  • To work with OAI Service Providers to achieve acceptable (technical, metadata and collection management) standards for the effective dissemination of the content;
  • To investigate digital preservation of e-prints using the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model;
  • To disseminate lessons learned and provide advice to others wishing to set up similar services.

The AHDS supports the work of SHERPA members by providing advice and guidance on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), quality control, preservation, standards, and other issues. Future work will also include the development of a preservation repository.
